What Actually Impedes the Pound Entering into the Euro?

Wang, Y.

As one of the dominant members in European Union (EU), the United Kingdom is different from most EU members. Instead of using euro, the single currency used by almost every EU member, the United Kingdom still keeps using its own currency: pound. It seems that it is due to some political reasons for the UK to separate from the euro zone. However, when observers look inside deeper they found all the reasons are related to the economy. This paper will use relative Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) to compare the national competitiveness among the UK and main euro land countries. Some other economic indexes, such as annual GDP growth rate, unemployment rate and interest rate, will be compared successively as well. In the end, this paper will give a comprehensive conclusion on the real reasons for the pound being outside euro zone.

An Analysis of the IMF Response to the 1997 Financial Crisis in Thailand

Ruitinga, R.J.

The IMF blamed weak fundamentals for the onset of the Financial Crisis in Thailand and based its policy decisions on this view. The aid package sent to Thailand implicitly confined the Thai policy response to what the IMF had laid out. The IMF’s strategy to rapid recovery did not meet its aims, instead prolonging and deepening the recession in Thailand. The failure of the aid package can largely be attributed to misguided policies by the IMF, but the Royal Thai Government can be blamed for failing to pass adequate laws that were required to reform the economy.

The New Dutch Immigration Policy and its Effects on Social Capital

Klapwijk, A.C.

This report investigates the influence of Dutch immigration policy, formed in 1998, on Social Capital. The theory on Social Capital used in this research uses a model from Becker and Murphy (2000) as a starting point. We have focused on two variables: ‘integration’ and ‘policy haste’. We conclude that the immigration policy definitely has effects on Social Capital. However we also find that the policy is only short term sighted. Long term problems like future labour shortage are not targeted by the immigration policies of The Netherlands.

Size Matters:Economies of Scale in the European Payments Market

Beijnen, C.

This thesis investigates the existence and extent of economies of scale in the European
payments processing industry. SEPA aims to facilitate the emergence of a competitive, intra-
European market by making cross-border payments as easy as domestic transactions. It is
expected that SEPA will spur consolidations and mergers among European payments
processors to more fully realize economies of scale. We find evidence for the existence of
significant economies of scale using data of eight European payment processors during the
years 1990-2005. This thesis also reveals that ownership structure is an important factor to
explain cost differences across European Automated Clearing Houses (ACHs).
