Behavioral influence on operational performance

<div>Jasper Blaauw</div>
The use of teams in operations is a well-established way of structuring an organization
with the purpose to perform tasks more effectively and improve operational
performance and competitive advantage. There has been a great deal of research on
teams and team performance in the academic literature (Tversky & Kahneman, 1974;
Hayes et al., 1988; Boudreau et al. 2003). The results of this research and practice showed
that team performance is not only influenced by operational factors but also by human
behavior, in particular behavioral biases. It is argued that behavioral biases
systematically affect (and often distort) a person’s judgment and decision-making (Gino
& Pisano, 2008). This study focuses on the anchoring & adjustment bias.

The impact of Strategic Supply Chain Flexibility on customer retention in the B2B segment.

<div>Omar Ibrahim</div>
As present developments like global competition, rapidly changing technology, and shorter product life cycles have contributed to making the current manufacturing environment an extremely competitive one, organizations face significant uncertainty and continuous change. Traditional manufacturing approaches, such as mass production of a few standardized products, are no longer sufficient competitive weapons by themselves. Customers are demanding a greater variety of high quality, low-cost goods and services.

Necessary conditions for performance-based contracting in the European railway industry.

<div>Albert Koch</div>
Performance-based contracting (PBC) has become popular in many industries, especially
in the armed forces and commercial and military aviation. Different from other forms of
contracting, a firm using a performance-based contract wants to have a performance, an
output or even an outcome rather than an action from a supplier. In the European
railway industry, this type of contracting is not widespread on the level of rolling stock
(maintenance), although the contrary should be expected and – from a practitioner's
point of view – desirable. In this research, necessary conditions for successful application
of this contract type are being developed and tested.

Are there essential ingredients for team reflexivity?

<div>Huib Maclean</div>
Team reflexivity has been getting increasingly more attention in literature. Team reflexivity is the extent to which group members overtly reflect upon, and communicate about the group's objectives, strategies and processes, and adapt them to current or anticipated circumstances. It can be very beneficial in different organizational situations such as product development, organizational changes, enhancing team effectiveness and sometimes even in improving team performance. Most useful is embedding reflexivity is project teams. Therefore this study investigated project teams at an engineering company specialized in railroads and railway stations in the Netherlands

Relaties onder druk?

<div>Martijn Siebrand</div>

Influence of Standardization

<div>Jean-Paul Lucassen</div>
As a response to a benchmark in 2012, NS’ management imposed cost savings in order
to meet the performance of the benchmark’s world class peer group. These savings
should be realized through process standardization. Business process standardization
has therefore been the subject of my master thesis.
The definition of a business process is a set of logically-related tasks, at least partially
executed by humans and performed to achieve a defined business outcome. Such
processes are the objects to standardize.

Identifying the level of agile in software development projects and
what will be the effect?

<div>Niels Oomen</div>
We live in a society that is and will be a more and more digital environment, both
private and work related. Most of the products we use contain software or we use a
software system. It is a discussion for several years now how the software development
process should be controlled to deliver the software faster, better and cheaper. The most
common way to deliver software is via the waterfall method. This way of working means
decide early and deliver slowly. This approach of working has been changed into a more
adaptive way, this means decide late and deliver fast. This last method is called: Agile.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects if a higher level of agile will
increase the quality of a software development projects.

<div>M. Amhadi</div>

Wederkerigheid in inkooprelaties

<div>N. Pruijsen</div>

Success criteria and critical success factors for contractors of urgent and unexpected projects

<div>ing. G. Korbijn</div>
Urgent and unexpected projects are defined as those that require continuous additional attention to minimize the overall lead time, and which were not regarded as likely to happen when planning resources in advance. Urgent and unexpected projects substantially differ in approach from best practice project management, as they do not start after an extensive feasibility study and completion of a detailed scope, budget and risk analysis (Meredith & Mantel, 2006). With the costs of asset downtime in mind, it is relevant for the field of operations management to understand which factors are critical for the success of these projects. A prerequisite to determine success factors is knowing if a project is successful. The objective of this study is therewith to contribute to the development of theory regarding urgent and unexpected projects by identifying the success criteria and critical success factors for contractors and specify their relation.

Corporate Social Responsibility in supply chains

<div>D. Smallenburg</div>
Driven by consumer and stakeholder pressure Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has
become an important aspect for firms over the last twenty years (Hoejmose & Adrien‐Kirby,
2012). CSR can be described as “the responsibility of a firm towards society in the economical,
legal and ethical dimension”(Schwartz & Carroll, 2003). Or, very simply put, CSR is the “positive impact of businesses on their stakeholders” (Turker, 2008). As firms are increasingly dependent on outsourcing (Trent & Monczka, 1998), responsible operations cannot exist
without a responsible supply chain (Millington, 2008). For this reason buyers seek ways to improve their supplier’s CSR performance. There are many factors that influence supplier CSR performance. This study specifically focussed on the factors that buying firms can directly control.

The influence of free time and perceived trust in supervisor on personal initiative

<div>A. Schepers</div>
There’s a lot of external pressure on today’s economy. Organizations have to be more flexible and innovative and employees have to show behavior that complies with this. One of behaviors is showing more Personal Initiative at work. This research will contribute to the theory of Personal Initiative by investigating the influence of the (amount of) reward Free Time and the employee’s perceived level of trust in the direct supervisor on Personal Initiative, because neither of them was investigated in previous research. Quantitative research has been conducted, within 9 organizations with 271 respondents, mostly in the healthcare sector. The results show a positive relation between reward Free Time and Personal Initiative and also between perceived level of trust in the direct supervisor and Personal Initiative. The relation between Reward Free Time shows an inverted U effect on Personal Initiative. The turning point lies at about 80 hours per month, thus until 80 hours a month, Personal Initiative continues to increase. Besides reward Free Time, other independent variables as Job Autonomy and Status Striving had also a considerable effect, more than Trust. The effect of Trust on Personal Initiative and as moderator between Free Time and Personal Initiative was very small, but positive. The influence of Trust becomes of more importance when Free Time becomes less or is not given at all. The results of this research can be used by supervisors to implement these antecedents to stimulate Personal Initiative.

Closed loop supply chain theory: A solution to the e-commerce nightmare
