Previous research in multiple countries has shown that different forms of spindoctoring or spindoctoring techniques are used in different national political contexts. Until this date however, there has been no research regarding spindoctoring on a local level. This study shows how local political communications are formed and which techniques of spindoctoring are used on a local level. A comparison is made how local spindoctoring relates to spindoctoring on the national level in the Netherlands. For this research, three Dutch municipalities have been used for a multiple case study. Ranging from small to large, different respondents with different functions within local political communications have been interviewed in the municipalities of Brielle, Spijkenisse and Dordrecht. The results show that spindoctoring on a local level depends on a number of factors that shape political communications in these municipalities.
