The aim of this research is to investigate the influence of job autonomy on the work life balance. Little research is done on the relation between job autonomy and work life balance. Increasing an employee’s job autonomy appears to be a raising trend in business. The research focusses on positive and negative effects of more job autonomy on the work and life balance of an employee. Role theories will try to explain the possible mediating effects on the relation between job autonomy and work life balance. The positive effect will be supported by the enhancement theory. The negative effect will be supported by the conflict theory. Both theories were tested using European Social Survey data. Although regression analysis confirms a positive effect of autonomy on work life balance, the trend could not be explained by the tested theories.
