Since the world TEU moves are constantly rising and the trade imbalances are a fact in the worldwide trade, the empty containers allocation problem appears to be persistent and is in need for a long-lasting solution. Multiple solutions, in terms of logistics management, IT systems and innovative products, were introduced to this problem but none appeared to create an appreciable difference. Nevertheless, literature suggests that although the maritime sector is a conservative one regarding innovations, they do need their introduction. With the help of the theory on innovations from the evolutionary economics, this research aims to present the potential benefits of the adoption of the 4FOLD container, a foldable container and how, where and by whom this innovative product can be implemented and used in order to solve the empty containers allocation problem.
