The study investigates the influence of goal orientations as disposition as well as trained, among unemployed people who were searching for a job. Learning goal orientation (LGO) is defined as focussing on increasing competences whereas a performance goal orientation (PGO) is defined as focussing on demonstrating competences and avoiding failures. 109 individuals searching for a job were randomly assigned to one of the three conditions: 1) training in setting learning goals, 2) training in setting performance goals, and 3) a control group trained in the enneagram. Results show benefits for LGO both as a disposition as well as trained. LGO as disposition has a positive relation with intentions to look for a job, job-search activities, self-efficacy and persistence in searching. Training on setting learning goals lead to more time spent on job-searching, a stronger relation between job-search intentions and job-search activities, less procrastination and more reemployment than a training in setting performance goals or setting no goals.
