As a consequence of the Apartheids Era, South Africa is facing an ongoing struggle for racial harmony. The media have operated under strict government control for a very long time. Therefore the South African media are sometimes still referred to as an institution of racism. The relatively young democracy in South Africa is still getting on its feet but certainly develops in a positive way. In a society where freedom of the press and freedom of speech could not been taken for granted, the improved access to information should be used in a positive way. The process of democratization could and should be supported by well informed citizens. For this research, six different high schools have been visited to investigate the news consumption of South African youth living in the Western Cape.
