This thesis focuses on the way politicians instrumentally use the racial diversity of the French football team. To do so, the work is centered around three World Cups (1998, 2010, 2018) and separates the comments from politicians by their parties. By analyzing those comments, the evolution from France’s 1998 Black-Blanc-Beur ideals to the fiasco and the ‘racaille’ comments of the 2010 World Cup to finally the 2018 World Cup comments centered around ‘colorblindness’ and endorsement of republican values demonstrate an evolution of French society. In addition, this works uncovers the different views as well as the evolutions of those views on national identity from France’s political parties and especially from France’s RN (formerly known as FN).
