An Empirical Study on the Electoral Support of Radical Right Parties in the European Parliament from 2009 to 2024

In recent years, Europe has experienced a growing presence of radical right parties (RRPs) within national governments. The latest European Parliament elections reveal that this trend is also extending to the supranational level. Therefore, the objective of this thesis is to examine electoral support for RRPs in European Parliament elections from 2009 to 2024, to understand the factors driving popular support for political views that deviate from the democratic principles and cosmopolitan vision defended by the European Union. This study is based on a quantitative analysis that incorporates both supply-side and demand-side factors, aiming to use these theoretical approaches in a complementary manner to provide a more comprehensive and innovative analysis. The findings indicate that both the political space, particularly regarding immigration issues between conservative and radical right parties, and the size of the migrant population in a country are factors that influence electoral support for RRPs. Nonetheless, the results also raise important questions for future research, such as the role that specific countries like France and their national contexts may play in shaping these dynamics. Finally, this study has also encountered conceptual limitations; nonetheless, further examinations have been developed to ensure that these methodological choices have not affected the validity of the overall findings
