Mestiza Double Consciousness Structuring the experiences of difference of Latinas in Amsterdam

This research project explores the role of Mestiza Double Consciousness (MDC) in structuring the experiences of difference among a group of thirteen Latinas in Amsterdam. As Latinas comprise a small percentage of the Dutch population and are perceived to be easy migrants, little attention is given to the complex experiences faced by this group. By further understanding Mestiza Consciousness and Double Consciousness as components of MDC, it becomes possible to see how it serves as a tool and space for navigating and moving between contradictory worlds, where constant negotiation and translation are essential. This research project aims to redefine the complex experiences of Latina migrants by combining various methods, including cafecitos (resembling interviews), group picnics (similar to focus groups), and inventive methodologies, by composing a textile exquisite cadaver, and autoethnographic reflections. The overlapping experiences that display MDC are further explored in four main themes: first, the desire and rejection of privilege, especially noticeable through changes in social class and one’s own race. Second, belonging and identity, which highlight experiences of othering and (self-)sexualization. Third, MDC negotiating with silence, conformity and constant proof of deservingness as migrant debt. Lastly, MDC as a strength and empowering form of living. Taken together, these sections highlight the powerful and distinct perspectives MDC provides, showing that although some feelings and experiences can be shared and communally understood, there is not only one experience of MDC by Latinas in Amsterdam, but instead continual individual negotiation between distinct identities, histories, and cultures.
