Rubber Repertoires - Rethinking Masculinity and Responsibility A qualitative study that delves into the sexual decision-making for condom use among young men between 20 and 25 in Rotterdam

This study explored the relationship between masculinity and male responsibility within the context of sexual dynamics, particularly focusing on condom use of men between 20 and 25 in Rotterdam. The focus group data highlights a relation between traditional masculine ideals and modern values of equality and care. Men expressed a desire to take responsibility for their partners’ well-being in sexual encounters but didn’t always act on this due to masculine norms of dominance and control. This often leads to inconsistencies in behavior and attitudes towards condom use because of conflicts with the performance-driven nature of masculinity. Through the analysis of several discursive repertoires, including Power, Performance, Trust and Control, Pleasure, Birth Control and STDs, and “Locker Room Talk”, the study revealed the complexities surrounding condom use decisions and gained insights about masculinity and responsibility regarding safe sex.
