Since independence in 1947 India has achieved significant progress in the field of health. Life expectancy has more than doubled from 32 years in 1947 to 66 years in 2004 while in the corresponding period infant mortality has fallen by over 60%. Smallpox and guineaworm have been eradicated while polio and leprosy are on the verge of being eradicated. On the other hand, infant and maternal mortality rates have stagnated since the 1990s. India has one-fifth of world diseases including a third of diarrhoeal diseases and Tuberculosis and a fifth of diabetes.
