Throughout the past 40 years the Scottish National Party (SNP) has become one of the strongest political forces within Scotland. At the same time we have seen significant changes in the way Scots indentify themselves within a national framework. This thesis looks at the relation between identity and the SNP. It does so by investigating the concepts of national and state identity within Scotland using both historical and sociological tools, and by analyzing the way identity is used by the Party within its party manifestos over the period 1970-2011.
