Freeing or forcing? Professionalization of the homecare industry in the Netherlands through Innovation
This thesis is a qualitative case study that examines how the implementation of self-organizing teams influences the organization and management of teams in the Dutch homecare industry. Self-organization has the ability to empower employees and also increases the responsibilities held by these employees. It affects their perceived job quality and the way in which they do their work. This research aims to identify what these effects are and how they have changed the organization and management of homecare teams in a traditional homecare organization. This was done trough a multiple casestudy, comparing the findings from a traditional homecare organization with those of Buurtzorg, an innovative homecare solution based on selforganization. Data for the traditional home care organization was gathered through in-depth interviews, company documents, and compared to Buurtzorg, as documented in media publications and various existing studies of the organization. Both cases were then analysed using a thematic and comparative analysis. The findings revealed that both the teams and the organization need to adjust to the implementation of self-organization and that tailor-made support from the company, coaching leadership and well-trained professionals will result in higher job quality in the homecare industry
